A downtown built to be walked past

Auburn's identity runs back to the Auburn Automobile Company, founded in 1900, which built its first car in 1903 and went on to launch the Cord and take on Duesenberg and Lycoming Engines before closing in 1937. The company's 1930 Art Deco administration and showroom building, designed by Alvin M. Strauss, has held the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum since 1974, with more than 120 classic cars across seven galleries. The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival happens the week around Labor Day every year, downtown cruise-in, parade, car show and concerts, and 2026 marks its 70th year. Add the 1911 to 1914 DeKalb County Courthouse designed by Mahurin and Mahurin of Fort Wayne, the 1911 Eckhart Public Library with its Bedford limestone basement, and Rieke Park with its mile and a half trail, and you get a downtown people actually use on foot, not just drive past.

That matters for hardscaping in a specific way. A patio, a bed line or a walkway here is not landscaping that only the homeowner sees from a back window. It sits along streets that fill up for a parade or a Saturday cruise-in, and curb appeal in Auburn carries more weight than it would in a town nobody walks through.

Bridgewater and the newer side of Auburn

The growth side of town looks different from the courthouse square. Bridgewater, the golf course community with Cedar Creek running through it, three covered bridges and 15 ponds, keeps adding lots through Bridgewater Preserves, roughly 50 new sites. Summerset Ridge on the southeast side, off County Road 46A, Bear Creek Estates with its walking paths and pond, Duesenberg Place and Villas of Coventry round out where Auburn is still building. Cedar Creek and where drainage matters

Cedar Creek drains the western part of DeKalb County and runs directly through Auburn, including through Bridgewater. The USGS built flood-inundation maps and a hydraulic model specifically for Cedar Creek at 18th Street in Auburn, which means that stretch has documented, studied flood behavior, not a guess. The city runs its own MS4 stormwater program. None of that means every yard near the creek is at risk, but it does mean a patio, wall or bed near Cedar Creek gets designed with somewhere for water to go, not just where it looks good.

Permits: the good news first

Auburn's Code of Ordinances is unusually direct about patios. It defines an at-grade patio, concrete, asphalt, brick, stone or other hard surface supported directly by the ground, as permit exempt, as long as no structural, electrical or plumbing work is involved. That is one of the clearer, more homeowner-friendly rules we work under anywhere. Fence permits in Auburn are commonly described as no fee, though we always confirm the current requirement before pulling one. Retaining walls are not addressed in Auburn's ordinance at all, so the roughly four-foot footing-to-top figure we use as a planning threshold is the general Indiana industry number, not something written into Auburn's code, and we check with the city before anything close to it.
